NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are the latest technology that has enabled more battery capacity into the same space. In fact user manuals for cameras prefer these NiMH batteries to alkalines.

NiMH capacities have increased in recent months from 1600 mAh to over 2700 mAh.
